Jumper cable

Jumper cables for electrical wiring, lines and the like having terminating plugs or connectors at terminating ends thereof are used in a variety of application. During maintenance of a power line, it may become accidentally energized due to the inadvertent closing of a breaker or switch or due to mutual induction from parallel live lines. To protect workers from electric shock should a fault occur, grounding jumper cables are installed in various configurations to form a jumper system. The jumper system provides a path for current to flow around the worker to a neutral line or to the earth. The use of jumper cables for starting the engine of a vehicle having a weak or dead battery is well known. It sometimes happens that an engine on a vehicle will not start because of a shortage of electricity in the vehicle's battery. When this happens, the drive of the car typically uses jumper cables to draw power from another source of electricity to start the vehicle and charge the weakened battery in the vehicle. Battery jumper cables are used to establish a circuit between a charged battery and a discharged battery such that the charged battery can be used to start the discharged battery. The jumper cables include two insulated conductive cables each terminating at opposing ends with connectors, all as a unitary device. The connectors are spring-loaded sawtooth clamps are identified as alligator clamps. Typical jumper cables are color coded, with one cable being black and the other cable being red. The red cable is for connection between the positive terminals of the rescue vehicle and the disabled vehicle, and the black cable is for connection between the negative or ground terminals of the rescue vehicle and the disabled vehicle.
